I just spent 3 hours playing Rock Band

and I still don’t really know any of the songs. Has anyone else noticed how very skewed the song choices are on that game? Just because they use the word “rock” does not mean that they can’t expand our tastes a little. I mean, Fall Out Boy? Really??

So I’ve decided to compile a short list of suggestions for the next version:

  • “Brilliant & Charming” Benjamin Del Shreve - A rock anthem if there ever was one; it practically begs you to sing along.
  • “Have Love, Will Travel” / “Your Touch” The Black Keys - This is the quintessential Rock Band group; why, you ask. Well, my friend, this band uses 3 instruments: drums, guitar, and voice. Wait, were those the exact same 3 instruments used in the game? Funny how that happened…
  • “An Honest Mistake” The Bravery – Yeah, the song’s pretty throwback, but still some good alt rock meets electronic stuff.
  • “Save Yourself” The Colour - Firstly, I would like to say that any band that adds that extra “u” gets points with me–and bonus points for being formed at a Christian university and actually making good music (way to rep). Secondly, the guitar in this song is pretty great, and Wyatt Hull’s voice would be a doozy to imitate.
  • “Taking Control” Eisley - Once again proving that girls can rock. Not all girls. Not even most. But some can–quite respectably, I might add.
  • “Devil’s Dance Floor” Flogging Molly – I don’t think I have to explain this one..
  • “Map of the Problematique” Muse – The fact that Muse has not been included in a game devoted to rock is a severe discrepancy. Seriously, they pretty much define the term.
  • Steady As She Goes” The Raconteurs – This song should be included if only for the line “You’ve had too much to think, now you need a wife.”
  • “Whole Wide World” Wreckless Eric – A song even I (and Will Ferrell) can play on the guitar in real life.
  • “Never There” Cake – Because this is just a fun song to sing.
  • “Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t've?)”  The Buzzcocks – Classic old school punk rock. [winner]
  • “Throwaway Style” The Exploding Hearts - I know I mentioned this track in a previous post, but it’s just to catchy not to mention again.
  • “Gotta Reason” Hard-Fi – Good indie rock from across the Lake that could definitely use some exposure in the States.
  • “Second Solution” The Living End – Australian rockabilly with some ska-like undertones, the kind you would blare in your car with the windows rolled down.
  • “Self Esteem” The Offspring – You know you want to be onstage singing this song. If only to pound out those “OoooooooAaaaaaaaaaOooooo”s.
  • “Devastation & Reform” Relient K – The guitar in this song is epic. The end.

And finally

  • “Layla” Eric Clapton – Because it is every true rockers dream to play this song.
