Courtesy of my sister, Feist on Sesame Street (greatest show ever):

Also, for those of you into NaNoRiMo, Word Count Journal is kind of a neat alternative.

And, because everyone and their brother seems to be getting married, a special tribute to the sugary stuff.

Finally! Someone has gotten the idea that free music can actually benefit bands by giving them the exposure they need to make people want to pay for their tunes. If you want to join, send me your email, so I can invite you and we can both get money on our accounts!

Cat’s great, but I just adore Feist. Who’s your favorite indie siren?

Yesterday I discovered the most glorious website, which hosts free music every single day!

Needless to say, my iTunes library has grown substantially since this discovery, and I have been systematically sampling said tunage with these results:

  • *The Wombats, “Let’s Dance to Joy Division” Indie pop at its best- and they’re British! I dare you to listen to this and not feel the urge to convulse wantonly. I downloaded A Guide to Love, Loss, & Desperation last night and am expecting good things. I’ll let you know how it goes..
  • *Camphor, “Confidences Shattered” & “The Sweetest Tooth” A soulful mixture of alt-country, folk, and good ole rock-n-roll, Camphor features the rough, doleful vocal talents of film composer Max Avery Lichtenstein’s. Love it. Love it, love it, love it. So much so that I actually ordered their latest album, Drawn to Dust.
  • The Little Ones, “Boracay” Kind of like an updated Beach Boys in a way that makes you want to spend the rest of your life on a crowded beach in Cali. Their album’s still downloading. I’m still in Indiana.
  • Yelle, “Je Veux Te Voir” Reminiscent of Camille, only slightly more mainstream. I had actually discovered this song a while ago, but due to the nature of the lyrics, I kept it to myself. However, as most people don’t speak French (dommage for them) and the song is so dang peppy, I thought I might as well include it. Really, it’s no worse than your average American rap song..
  • Born Ruffians, “Foxes Mate for Life” (and may I just add that I think people should, too) Pretty typical indie, but definitely still good stuff. Love the guitar.
  • Bryan Scary and the Shredding Tears, “The Zero Light” Nice mixture of hard and light. According to Last.fm, they’ve already been compared to The Beatles, The Kinks, The Move/ELO, Queen, XTC, Yes, Frank Zappa, The Flaming Lips, Ben Folds, and Of Montreal–a pretty impressive lineup. Still looking for the album. Any help?
  • House & Parish “This Curse” Rogue Wave-esque melodies with Iron & Wine vocals. And they have a girl!
  • *The Acorn, “Flood Pt. 1″ I’m pretty sure I already adore this band, and I’ve only heard one song. But I am now proud owner of two albums. This song wants me to dance, watch Tarzan, and go to Africa, simultaneously. Congrats, Canada, for turning out yet another amazing band.
  • The Cave Singers, “Seeds of Night” Quirky folk trio that makes me want to curl up with a book and a cup of green tea. Also, they have a harmonica.
  • *Tulsa, “Shaker” & “Rafter” Not only is this band’s moniker extremely ironic, it does not all denote what one would expect from such a title. This, my friends, is Indie at its best (very a la Rogue Wave). I approve

*Bands that must be given a listen. If you do nothing else with your life, do this!

Hopefully, I will have some album reviews up soon, but now I’ve got a date with my sister’s straightener so I can convince my stylist it was a good idea to give myself rocker bangs…heh.

So lately I have realized that I am constantly giving people music recommendations (or forcing recs upon them, depending on your point of view), and instead of losing track of who I’ve told to listen to what, it would behoove me to give everyone an equal opportunity in sharing my aural pleasures. Ergo, this blog. Huzzah.
